Tiredness, sleep disruption, poor concentration and low energy can occur with stress, anxiety and depression. Symptoms overlap, but their causes, course and treatment may differ. One sentence — “I am stressed” — does not tell the whole story. [1]
During prolonged overload, symptoms may relate to demands and insufficient recovery. Anxiety may involve persistent worry, fear and avoidance. Depression can involve continuing low mood or loss of interest. These problems may also coexist, and a physical health condition sometimes needs to be ruled out. [2]
A careful assessment looks at duration, daily functioning, previous episodes, sleep, medication and life circumstances. The purpose is not to label symptoms quickly, but to identify what kind of help is appropriate. Severe hopelessness or suicidal thoughts require urgent support. [3]
