You can be heading in the right direction even when you cannot yet see the harbour.
Denmark is surrounded by the sea, and many people know the sight of a coastline almost disappearing in fog. The period after depression can feel much the same: you are moving forward, yet ordinary duties still take enormous effort.
Daily life needs to be rebuilt
Long-lasting depression can affect work, relationships, physical fitness, finances, self-confidence and belief in the future. These things do not necessarily return all at once. [1]
It may bring to mind one of Vilhelm Hammershøi’s quiet interiors: everything is in its usual place, yet the room feels different. Life can look normal from the outside while you are still finding your footing again.
Returning to work or education
A person may be able to shop for groceries, prepare a meal and have a brief conversation, yet still struggle to get through a full working day.
Work and education require concentration, memory, organisation, pace and interaction with others. A gradual return can therefore be more helpful than starting full-time immediately. [2] [3]
It is not only about the number of hours. Starting with fewer tasks, clearer expectations, less responsibility, fewer interruptions and the possibility of taking breaks may also be important.
This is not laziness. It is part of rebuilding the ability to function. [1] [3]
Hygge can help — but it cannot treat everything
Hygge — the Danish sense of warmth, cosiness and togetherness — along with close relationships, regular routines, sleep and movement can support recovery. But hygge is not a treatment for moderate or severe depression. A person can sit in a warm room with coffee and good company and still be seriously depressed.
Professional treatment may therefore be needed even in a caring and supportive environment. [3]
When have you recovered?
Recovering from depression does not mean never feeling sad, worried or tired again. Life includes both bright summer evenings and November rain.
The aim is not a life without difficult emotions. It is a life in which depression no longer determines what you can think, feel and do.
Recovery often means being able to connect with others again, make decisions, feel interest and joy, handle ordinary challenges and see a future ahead.
Sometimes you do not need to see the entire route. Being able to see the next navigation marker may be enough.
